Household products, especially any detergent that touches dishware, should have safe ingredients to prevent harmful internal and external effects if consumed. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and most products on the market contain toxic chemicals. Here’s what to know.As environmental issues arise, we can take a closer look at the products we use in our day-to-day lives for insight into our contribution to the cause. Doing the dishes is one of those chores that we tend to—or at least we try to—do quite often during the week. Have you ever wondered if the soap you are using could be harmful to you or the environment? Or understanding which chemicals on the ingredient label do what? Or even tried pronouncing the listed chemicals? Well, if you’re anything like us, we can stutter through those chemical names together.
Here is a list of ingredients to stay away from:
- Alkyl phenoxy ethanol (APEs)
- Chlorine dichloromethane (DCM)
- Diethanolamine (DEA)
- Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate
- Phosphates, and
- Synthetic fragrances
What Can These Ingredients Cause?
All of these are commonly found in conventional dish soaps. These chemicals can be irritating, poisonous, and cancerous to you and your loved ones. Additionally, evidence has revealed that these chemicals contribute to genetic and pulmonary issues.
To add to the list of effects, these chemicals pollute our water supply when we are washing them down the drain, leading them to contaminate fish populations and increase algae in our water supply.
Ultimately, The Risk is Too High — Switch to Natural Ingredients that Work Just as Well
Although these chemicals are diluted enough to fall within the range to legally not be considered a toxic product, they can still leave residues on the objects, surfaces, and dishes we use them on. As a result, they can make their way onto our food and into our digestive system. Unfortunately, these chemicals are not regulated as well as we’d like to believe they should be.
