Why Being Biodegradable is Important: Recharge Your Body Without Hurting the Earth

How can we make sure the products we choose to use aren’t hurting the planet?

Is it enough to simply trust companies to be honest? Or is the onus on us to look into things ourselves, and vote with our purchases?

Mindful consumption is a growing movement that encourages us to be conscious of what we buy and how it affects our bodies and the planet.

It’s based on a simple philosophy: we are what we consume. What we put into our bodies or put onto our bodies will influence our energy. And if we can be confident that what we’re choosing won’t harm the planet, we are reconnecting with the larger ecosystem of the Earth, and remembering that we have a responsibility not only to be careful with what we take, but also what we put back.

If we want a healthy planet, it’s on us to think about how we treat it. Seems simple, right? So why aren’t all products biodegradable?

The Problem:

Non-Biodegradable Products and a Polluted Planet

It’s not always immediately obvious that we’re doing any harm.

The Eurasian otter was becoming all but extinct in the UK in the 1950s and 1960s, until concerted efforts helped to rebuild the population. This was often cited as a rare success story in nature. However, recent population dips have been blamed on British waterways, with many seeing it as a wake up call about the state of British rivers and their contamination due to poor legislative protection and conservation.

And as a further reminder that we’re an inseparable part of nature, recent studies have shown traces of microplastics in the human body. As we sit at the top of the food chain, concentrations that build up in smaller life forms compound to dangerous levels by the time they get to us. And as studies are still ongoing, we can’t know for sure yet what long-term damage we’re doing.

Unfortunately, many conventional personal care products contain a cocktail of harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients. These products often end up in our waterways, harming wildlife and disrupting delicate ecosystems. Microplastics, tiny plastic fragments found in countless products, are a growing concern. They pollute our oceans, infiltrate the food chain, and pose a potential threat to human health.

The Illusion of Improvement

With the rise in mindful consumerism, there’s been an increase in demand from consumers for more sustainable and environmentally-friendly products. As a result, more companies are making an effort to improve. Or so it would seem. Because despite many companies claiming publicly to be beginning initiatives designed to improve their practices and be more eco-conscious, they’re falling short. Whether from shareholder pressure or a desire to minimise costs, a lot of companies have been caught “greenwashing”. As the UN states:

“Greenwashing presents a significant obstacle to tackling climate change. By misleading the public to believe that a company or other entity is doing more to protect the environment than it is, greenwashing promotes false solutions to the climate crisis that distract from and delay concrete and credible action.”

“Greenwashing presents a significant obstacle to tackling climate change. By misleading the public to believe that a company or other entity is doing more to protect the environment than it is, greenwashing promotes false solutions to the climate crisis that distract from and delay concrete and credible action.”

This was highlighted in the recent scandals around some top banks trying to greenwash their role in the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.

Other companies may make a big song and dance about a new green policy that ends up doing more harm than good (such as Amazon.com being found in an investigation by The Telegraph to be wrapping their sustainable range in single use plastic - not the first alleged example of Amazon failing on a green goal).

The Solution:
